Here is a great article by Carrie Hagen on the phillyist.com about the salsa scene and George Dennis “Big George”!
She goes out salsa dancing in Manhattan with her friend Mathina only after having a couple lessons with George Dennis.

It was another good night salsa dancing at the Atrium Dance Studio in Pennsauken, NJ. The dance floor was filled with plenty of salsa babies. It presented the “regulars” an opportunity to dance with and meet new people.
I went early to meet up with my friend Diana. She did say that she was going to come early this time, but of course, she showed up fashionably late. At no fault of her own though. This time she brought a friend with her named Ana. Diana did her a great service and had all her amigos salseros dance with Ana.

It was nice of her to do that, because when you are a beginner you tend to be a little shy to get on the dance floor. You don’t know what to really expect, especially if its your first salsa dance.
I had a great time dancing with everyone and had a few dances with Diana.
Girls are most happy when their hair is horizontal and I managed to capture this moment. See the big smile on her face? Just remember to close your mouth and your eyes when you see hair coming at you!
One of the great things about salsa dancing other than the dance is the social aspect. You get to meet lots of people young and old from all walks of life. You really should make it a point to dance with at least 1 or 2 people you haven’t danced with before. You never know who you are going to meet – you may even make a new friend.
Amoung the people I met tonight was, Jena, a grad student from UPenn who has been dancing salsa for two years. She has traveled the world and may be able to give us a unique view and insight into salsa dancing. So, watch for her salsa article in the near future.

Just came back from George Dennis’ On2 Mambo Class! It was refreshing to get back into the classes. Its been too long since I’ve taken lessons that I feel like my brain has turned to mush and can’t retain things as long and its harder for me to pick up stuff without getting confused. Or is that just part of getting older?
It was a fun class! It started at 8 pm and ended around 9:30 pm. The first 45 minutes was mostly styling for warm up and the last half of the class was used for pattern work.
George got us working hard and concentrated on teaching us styling and technique. Right now, the classes are small, and its nice. You should consider taken some of his classes in Westville Square because with small classes you can get almost get the attention of the instructor as almost as if it were a private lesson.
Check out our website on George Dennis for more information.
Update: 12/26/2011 George no longer has salsa classes in Westville.

2008 was a rough year for everyone. I basically laid low for the better half of 2008 and haven’t taken salsa classes or gone out to Latin parties that much.
Its time to get back into the groove of things and get my mind working again. So I’ll be taking weekly classes consistently with George Dennis and Victor Colon this year. I plan to go to the salsa socials once a week either on Friday’s or Saturdays. If you can’t make the socials to see the performances, visit my Salsa Performance Groups webage every now and then to check out the performances you miss.

Just got back from the Sweatshop in Cherry Hill, NJ! The turnout was great! There were probably 100 people in the studio that night.
They don’t call it the Sweat Shop for nothing.. The windows were steamy from all the hot salsa dancing going on that night. George, Elaine, and Delilah celebrated their birthday and had the usually salsa birthday dance. About half the room was wearing red as part of the celebration.
DJ Clave, did not disappoint and played the hottest salsa, merengue, cha-cha-cha, and bachata all night.
Many thanks to all the people who came!
Salsa Dancing Addict will be at the next Salsambo event in February. Come join us Friday, February 6th at Westville, NJ.
Update: 12/26/2011 The Sweatshop no longer exists at this location.
